According to a statement from the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, an eruption occurred at around 2:00 AM local time. While the lava spewed by the volcano reached a height of 80 meters, it was reported that volcanic gas and ash clouds formed. The eruption likely prevented a potential disaster within the boundaries of a national park that has been closed to the public since 2007.
