While continuing traffic safety efforts on highways, environmentally friendly and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) are also being promoted for a comfortable journey. According to information compiled from the 2025 Central Government Budget Law Proposal, the General Directorate of Highways (KGM) is continuing its efforts without slowing down to ensure safe travel on the roads and to minimize traffic accidents. INTELLIGENT SYSTEMS REDUCE ACCIDENTSIntelligent systems integrated with networks created on highways using GPS and wireless technology inform drivers in advance about situations such as icing, fog, accidents, and road work, playing a significant role in taking necessary precautions to minimize potential traffic accidents. Efforts are also ongoing to expand the use of digital warning and information screens installed at critical points to a wider area. As a result of the activities carried out by KGM, while the roads are becoming "smarter," work continues on the development of environmentally friendly transportation systems. For the upcoming year, a budget of 322 billion 584 million 819 thousand lira is allocated for road transportation, 18 billion 748 million 516 thousand lira for traffic safety services, and 8 billion 119 million 35 thousand lira for management and support programs. THE LENGTH OF SMART ROADS WILL INCREASEBy the end of this year, the length of the Intelligent Transportation Systems application is planned to be 163 kilometers, with projections to increase to 170 kilometers in 2025, 180 kilometers in 2026, and 190 kilometers in 2027. The communication infrastructure to be established on state and provincial roads is planned to reach 435 kilometers by the end of this year. The goal is for this infrastructure to reach 550 kilometers next year, 600 kilometers in 2026, and 650 kilometers in 2027. ROAD MARKINGS WILL BE INCREASEDAs part of traffic safety efforts, improvement work will be carried out at 34 accident black spots in 2025. In that year, the target is to create 31 million 800 thousand square meters of horizontal markings, 136 thousand square meters of vertical markings, and 2 thousand 100 kilometers of guardrails. SPECIAL MEASURES FOR DROWSY DRIVERSFor drivers who leave their lane due to reasons such as fatigue, drowsiness, and inattention, or who need to be warned due to unexpected road conditions, rumble strips are used, providing audible or vibrating alerts to drivers. In this context, the General Directorate of Highways will construct 725 kilometers of rumble strips in 2025.
