Diori Hamani International Airport, located in Niger's capital Niamey, was targeted by an armed group yesterday morning. Following a raid carried out by 22 attackers, extensive security measures were implemented in the area.
To capture the attackers, the airport perimeter was closed by security forces, and vehicles exiting the area were searched one by one.
35 PEOPLE LOST THEIR LIVES
Niger's Ministry of Defense announced that a total of 35 people lost their lives in the attack. It was reported that 22 of the deceased were attackers, 11 were soldiers, and 2 were civilians. The statement also indicated that 22 attackers were neutralized during the attack, and 4 attackers were wounded.
20 PEOPLE TAKEN INTO CUSTODY
In operations by security forces, 20 individuals believed to be connected to the attack were apprehended. RPG-7 rocket launchers, AK-47 rifles, hand grenades, explosives, communication equipment, and thousands of rounds of ammunition were seized during the operations.
EYEWITNESSES DESCRIBED EXPLOSION SOUNDS
Eyewitnesses living near the airport reported hearing violent explosion sounds in the early morning hours. Lawalli Tsalha, a resident of the area, stated that he heard a loud explosion around 6:00 AM local time and said they could not initially understand what was happening.
SAME AIRPORT TARGETED FOR THE SECOND TIME THIS YEAR
Diori Hamani International Airport was attacked for the second time in the last five months. In an attack carried out by an ISIS-linked group in January, 20 attackers were killed and 4 soldiers were wounded.
