In recent times, to prevent the grievances caused by the increase in the sale of counterfeit or low-quality gold across the country, jewelers in Adana have hung signs in their shops stating, "Only newly minted mint gold products are sold in this establishment." With this implementation, it has been reported that jewelers will now only be able to sell newly minted quarter, half, and full gold coins.

Recently, the record-breaking gold prices, influenced by global developments, have activated counterfeiters producing gold in the underground market. Security forces seized a total of 1,350 fake gold pieces, including 1,125 quarter gold, 98 half gold, and 127 full gold, valued at 12 million 253 thousand TL during a simultaneous operation conducted in Adana last May. In recent times, operations have also been carried out against those who have been circulating fake and low-quality gold in many provinces.

AS VICTIMIZATION INCREASED, IT WAS DECIDED TO ONLY SELL MINT PRODUCTS

Especially with the advancement of technology, it has become much easier to lower the quality of gold, and jewelers can now understand this by simply having analyses done in workshops. As the low quality of gold in grams, quarters, halves, and full gold from customers led to serious victimization in the market, the Adana Jewelers' Chamber made a decision. According to the decision made by the Chamber, gold in grams, quarters, halves, and full gold received from customers will now be analyzed before purchase, but these gold pieces will be sent for melting. Jewelers will only be able to sell mint gold in grams, quarters, halves, and full gold dated 2025. Signs stating 'Only new dated mint gold products are sold at this establishment' were distributed to jewelers in the city. While both citizens and tradesmen are satisfied with the application, jewelers who do not comply with this practice can be reported.

"SOMETIMES IT'S VERY HARD FOR US TO DISTINGUISH THESE"

Speaking to İhlas News Agency regarding the issue, Oğuz Başman, the President of the Adana Jewelers' Chamber, stated, "The most commonly purchased gold in Turkey is in grams, quarters, halves, and full gold. We have encountered both low-quality and counterfeit products that have been circulated by malicious individuals in the market. Sometimes it is very hard for us to distinguish these. Therefore, we have implemented such a practice to clean the market from old goods and to exchange the gold in the hands of our citizens for new gold."

"WE WANT TO PROTECT BOTH OUR CITIZENS AND OUR TRADESPEOPLE"

Başman advised citizens not to buy old dated gold, saying, "Our citizens should definitely buy new dated products for savings or gifts. There are those who have old dated products in their possession. They can exchange these without any financial loss whenever they want. Their gold is still gold, but they should buy new dated products in their future purchases. Operations have been carried out, and we have implemented such a practice to protect both our citizens and our tradespeople," he said.

Başman explained that they have reported the situation to the Adana Chief Public Prosecutor's Office and filed a complaint, saying, "We do not know the individuals who are circulating these gold pieces in the market. There is a group that manipulates the market. We have filed a complaint with the Adana Chief Public Prosecutor's Office regarding these individuals. Our esteemed chief prosecutor has stated that he will closely monitor the issue. We will completely clean the market from them," he said.

"OUR VICTIMIZATIONS WILL NOW BE ELIMINATED"

Tradesman Latif Mengi expressed, "We are very pleased with this application. We have been very disturbed by this issue for a long time. Adana's reputation is now being restored. The number of fake and low-quality gold has increased significantly. Our citizens and tradespeople have suffered greatly. Our victimizations will now be eliminated," he stated.

Nur Er, who came to buy gold, expressed her satisfaction with the application, stating that she buys gold from jewelers she knows and does not request non-mint products.
