Russian President Vladimir Putin met on Friday with a four-year old girl who received a heart transplant a year ago.

Vera Smolnikova, from the Siberian city of Novosibirsk, received nationwide media attention when Putin and former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi arranged for her to be sent to Italy to receive a donor heart.



The surgery was performed on May 19, 2011. The girl recently completed a rehabilitation course and returned to Russia together with her parents.



The president welcomed Vera and her parents to the Kremlin Palace, where they sat down for tea.



Putin told the family that Russia needs regulatory changes to ensure citizens have access to heart transplants.
