It has emerged that there is a price difference of more than 9,000 liras between 22-carat and 14-carat quarter gold coins that look identical. While the 22-carat quarter gold coin minted by the Mint is sold for 10,300 liras, the 14-carat “diluted” quarters produced by press printing find buyers at 1,200 liras. Experts warned citizens who will buy gold for weddings, engagements, and savings not to be deceived by appearances.
Attention was drawn to the large price difference among products with the same appearance in quarter gold, the most preferred for weddings, engagements and gifts. Low-karat quarter gold coins are becoming harder to distinguish.
“VISUALLY IDENTICAL”
According to the news on Show Haber, jeweler Samet Dağaslan stated that 14-karat quarter gold coins are produced by press printing, saying, “These are produced by printing press. They are visually identical one-to-one.” Dağaslan stated that diluted gold is produced not only in quarter, but also in half and full gold sizes.
DIFFERENCE IS IN WEIGHT
According to the information provided by Dağaslan, the 14-karat quarter is significantly lighter than the 22-karat quarter. The bullion quarter gold minted by the Mint is produced as 22 karat and weighs approximately 1.75 grams. Dağaslan noted that the cheaper 14-karat quarters also attract many buyers.
QUARTER GOLD TRADES AT 10,548 LIRA
According to market data, the selling price of quarter gold was at 10,548 lira this morning, while the selling price of gram gold was at 6,384 lira.

The jewelers' chambers had also warned citizens against low-karat and fake gold in previous statements. Murat Kurtuluş Buyrukçu, President of the Izmir Jewelers' Chamber, said about gold sold below market price, “If it is sold below those prices, one should be suspicious.” Experts recommend that the karat and weight of gold must definitely be checked and that shopping be done from reliable jewelers in exchange for an invoice.
