"Authority for body searches for neighborhood and district watchmen."

22.11.2024 00:20

With the law passed by the Grand National Assembly of Turkey, neighborhood watchmen will be able to conduct searches if they see sufficient suspicion regarding a person or vehicle they have stopped.

The Law on Internal Affairs Officers and the Law on Amendments to the Decree Law No. 375 was accepted and enacted in the General Assembly of the Turkish Grand National Assembly (TBMM).

AUTHORITY TO CONDUCT A SEARCH ON THE PERSON

The neighborhood watchman may conduct a physical search on individuals or vehicles if there is sufficient suspicion that a weapon or an item that could endanger his or her life or the life of others is present. This is to prevent harm to himself or others. In vehicles, he may check the areas that are visible from the outside.

CANNOT REQUEST REMOVAL OF CLOTHING

According to the proposal accepted in the General Assembly, neighborhood watchmen will not be able to conduct searches of individuals or vehicles for this purpose. Additionally, they cannot request the removal of clothing from a person or the opening of sections of a vehicle that are not visible from the outside for this purpose.
