Numerous sacks that washed ashore in the Atakum district of Samsun caused tense moments in the region. During the initial examinations by teams in the area, it is being considered that the sacks may contain "ammonium nitrate," a substance used in the production of high-nitrogen fertilizer.
SACKS WASHED ASHORE DREW ATTENTION
According to the information obtained, the incident occurred yesterday evening on the coast of İncesu Yalı Neighborhood in the Atakum district. Citizens who noticed the unattended sacks washed ashore reported the situation to authorities without delay. Following the report, AFAD, police forces, the Coast Guard Black Sea Regional Command, and municipal teams were dispatched to the area.
SAMPLES WERE TAKEN
Teams arriving at the scene took security measures along the coastline, while experts from the Provincial Directorate of Environment, Urbanization, and Climate Change collected samples from the substance in the sacks for detailed analysis. In the initial gas measurements conducted in the area, it was determined that the substance in question did not release any toxic gas and posed no immediate poisoning hazard to the environment.
The sacks scattered on the coast, which could pose a risk, were completely removed from the beach with the help of excavators and trucks belonging to Samsun Metropolitan Municipality and transported to a safe area.
IT COULD BE AMMONIUM NITRATE
In the initial field assessments, it is evaluated that the chemical in the sacks could be "ammonium nitrate," which is widely preferred in agricultural activities. While it has not yet been clarified how the sacks reached the shore via sea and from which ship or source they fell, the Coast Guard and police forces continue their investigation into the incident.
