The city of Krakow in southern Poland has launched a pilot birth control program to prevent the increase in the number of pigeons and to improve their overall condition.
In the tourist city of Krakow, famous for its pigeons, birth control will be applied to the pigeons. The Krakow Municipality, together with the Dzikusy Salamandry Foundation and various scientific and research circles, has prepared a pilot birth control program for pigeons.
"THE AIM IS TO IMPROVE THE OVERALL CONDITION OF PIGEONS"
Krakow Municipality's Spokesperson for Animals, Sabina Janeczko, stated that the aim of the program is to improve the overall condition of the pigeons and to reduce the difficulties arising from the excessive increase in their population, which leads to diseases and access to food. Janeczko noted that special feeders will be placed in certain areas where pigeons are commonly found in the city, and she informed that the birds will not disappear immediately the next day as a result of the program.
BIRTH CONTROL MEDICATION WILL BE PLACED IN THE FEEDERS
Janeczko stated, "The feeders will dose birth control medication into the corn they contain every day; in other words, the corn kernels will be coated with the medication," and she mentioned that the pilot program is a long-term but safe process.
Veterinarian Przemyslaw Baran from the Dzikusy Salamandry Foundation noted that dozens of injured or neglected pigeons are brought to their clinic every day, and therefore they decided to systematically address the issue.
