In the investigation into the death of 4-year-old Aren Eren, the son of a Turkish father and a Greek mother, in Greece, it was determined that the child died due to prolonged starvation and dehydration. While it was assessed that the child's death occurred at least 48 hours before the hospital admission, the possibility that the death may have gone unnoticed for an extended period has also been included in the scope of the investigation. The investigation, in which the mother has been arrested, continues in both countries.
The 4-year-old son of a Turkish father and a Greek mother, Aren Eren, died in Greece due to prolonged starvation and dehydration, according to the investigation.
BLOOD-CURDLING INCIDENT REVEALED IN AUTOPSY REPORT In the investigation conducted in Greece, the cause of death of 4-year-old Aren Eren was alleged to be multiple organ failure due to prolonged starvation and dehydration, according to the autopsy report. The investigation file stated that the child experienced severe weight loss during the process leading to his death, dropping from 17 kilograms to 9 kilograms.
The child's death was estimated to have occurred at least 48 hours before the hospital admission, and the possibility that the death may not have been noticed for a long time was also included in the scope of the investigation.
JUDICIAL PROCESS CONTINUES IN BOTH TURKIYE AND GREECE Aren Eren, born on April 23, 2022, was stated to have had his custody given to the mother after the divorce process, lived for a period in Turkiye with his father and grandmother, and was later taken to Greece. It was learned that during the divorce process, father Huday Can Eren was imprisoned. The father of the deceased Aren Eren, Huday Can Eren, requested that the other twin children, Laren and Arlen, who were placed with a foster family, be brought to Turkiye.
It was learned that within the scope of the investigation, an arrest warrant was issued for the mother on the grounds of "negligence of care and supervision duties," and it was reported that the judicial process continues in Greece. It was stated that the investigation into the incident is being deepened and the judicial process is ongoing in both Turkiye and Greece.
"I LEARNED THAT MY SON WAS KILLED BY STARVATION" The father of the deceased Aren Eren, Huday Can Eren, stated that he learned of his child's death months later, saying, "We have been in the divorce process since 2023. At one point, I was imprisoned, and during this period, my child was handed over to his mother. After that process, I did not hear from my son for a long time. On May 22, the Chief Public Prosecutor's Office notified me that my son had died. I learned of his death months later. Later, when I spoke with my mother, I learned that my son was killed by starvation. He was healthy when he left here, about 22 kilograms, but I learned that when he died, he had dropped to 9 kilograms. It is impossible for me to accept what happened. I want my other twin children to be brought to Turkiye and for the case to be heard here."
"OUR ONLY REQUEST IS THAT OUR TWIN CHILDREN BE GIVEN TO US" Describing the handover process during the legal process and the events that followed, grandmother Semiha Coşkun said, "Aren's custody was initially with his father by the Edirne Second Family Court here, but it was temporarily given to his mother during the period when his father was in prison. Later, a passport permit was granted for the child to go abroad. I had to hand over the child by court order, accompanied by a psychologist and police. When I handed him over, Aren was around 22-23 kilograms. Our legal struggle continued throughout the process. I had video calls with Aren for a while; we had contact until August 19. After that, she blocked me everywhere. During this process, we applied to our courts again and I filed a new case for the custody of all three children. Initially, we were informed that the child died of cardiac arrest and respiratory failure. However, later, when I followed the Greek media, I learned the allegations that the child had dropped to 9 kilograms and died of starvation. Autopsy reports also confirmed this. It is impossible to understand this. This process is not something that happens in a short time. How can they do this to a child? I cannot understand. I cannot call the other party a mother; that would be an insult to a mother. I have been constantly traveling between Greece and Turkiye for six months, we are putting up a great struggle. We are at a point where words fail. Our only request now is that our twin children be given to us."
"WE ARE FOLLOWING THE PROCESS IN BOTH TURKIYE AND GREECE" Lawyer Kübra Köse Gökdemir, stating that they received the news of Aren's death while waiting for his custody, said, "When the child was sent to Greece, he was 22 kilograms and all health checks were being done by the grandmother. Later, we were approached with a request to give us Aren in the form of a consensual divorce. While we were waiting for Aren's custody, we received the news of his death. After this process, we made the necessary applications and learned that the death occurred in a very heinous manner. We brought the ongoing process in Greece to the Turkish authorities as well, and submitted our complaints to the Edirne Chief Public Prosecutor's Office. The investigation file is currently ongoing actively. Similarly, the divorce case continues because there are two remaining healthy children. We are primarily requesting their custody. A provisional custody decision has already been obtained from the Turkish authorities. The process continues in Greece. Since the children are Greek citizens, they were taken under protection and are currently with a foster family. We believe it would be more appropriate for these children to grow up with their root family, within their own culture. Since they are currently with a Greek foster family, we argue that this should be changed. Our primary request is for the two healthy children to be brought to Turkiye, to be with their father and grandmother. Additionally, we have requests for Aren's body to be brought to Turkiye. We are cooperating with our colleagues in Greece. The autopsy photos are truly not something a person's heart can bear. There is a picture too heavy to show anyone. It is stated that the child is unrecognizable. It is unacceptable that a child known to be healthy with his grandmother has died in this way in Greece. We will follow this process to the end."
