Comedian Deniz Göktaş, who was subjected to an ex officio investigation due to expressions he used in his stand-up show, was detained at Istanbul Airport upon his return from abroad. After his procedures at the police station, he was referred to the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, and his statement to the prosecutor was taken.

The prosecutor's office referred the suspect to the duty criminal judgeship with a request for arrest. After his questioning at the judgeship, Deniz Göktaş was arrested on charges of "publicly insulting religious values" and "insulting the president."
