The subcontracted workers who clean the restrooms operated by the İzmir Metropolitan Municipality recently went on strike and were threatened by Mayor Cemil Tugay. Arriving in an official vehicle, Mayor Tugay spoke to the workers briefly, saying, "You are not our workers, do not stay here. If you stay here, I will not let you work for that company either."
The subcontracted workers responsible for the cleaning and maintenance of the toilets and baby care centers belonging to the İzmir Metropolitan Municipality (İZBB) protested against being deprived of their social rights, citing the reason for their reaction to the re-awarding of the tender to the same company, and decided to go on strike.
"IF YOU CONTINUE TO STAY HERE..."
The workers, who continued their actions in front of the İzmir Art building, faced a threat from CHP's İzmir Metropolitan Mayor Cemil Tugay while they were conveying their demands. Tugay told the workers, "Don't stay here," and threatened them by saying, "If you continue to stay here, I will not let you work at that company either."
"THERE ARE TENS OF THOUSANDS OF UNEMPLOYED PEOPLE IN THIS CITY"
Tugay stated that the place the workers needed to go to claim their rights was their own company, saying, "You are not employees of the Metropolitan Municipality; you are employees of this company. There are tens of thousands of unemployed people in this city. Please do not do this."
"YOU WILL NOT WEAR THESE"
When one of the subcontracted workers pointed out that the uniform given to the employees had the İzmir Metropolitan Municipality's logo on it, Tugay responded, "I will speak, you will not wear these. If you continue to stay here, you will no longer be able to work at that company either," and left the area.
