While the repercussions of Turkey's additional tax on cars imported from China continue, last month the tax imposed on plug-in hybrid vehicles drew China's reaction. The Chinese Ministry of Commerce has complained to the World Trade Organization (WTO) about Turkey due to the new additional taxes. In June, Turkey imposed an additional tax on all vehicles imported from China. Additionally, in September, plug-in hybrid vehicles were also included in the scope of the additional tax. These regulations have drawn the reaction of Chinese manufacturers, who have reached high sales figures in Turkey, prompting the Chinese government to take action. THEY COMPLAINED TO THE WTOThe Chinese Ministry of Commerce, through its spokesperson, claimed that Turkey has taken 'discriminatory measures' due to the additional customs tax imposed on plug-in hybrid vehicles and filed a complaint with the World Trade Organization (WTO). China alleged that Turkey violated WTO rules. The ministry characterized the additional taxes as 'a typical protectionist measure' and requested that Turkey 'immediately correct its erroneous practices' in compliance with its WTO obligations. THE PROCESS WILL PROCEED WITH CONSULTATIONSThe WTO will examine the trade dispute following China's complaint. The WTO, which has initiated the 'dispute mechanism' process, is expected to conduct 'consultations' (the process of obtaining opinions).
