The 5.6 magnitude earthquake that occurred in Malatya's Battalgazi district was also felt in surrounding provinces, causing citizens to panic and rush into the streets. In footage captured by a security camera at a workplace in Kahramanmaraş, moments where a customer tried to flee during the earthquake while the shopkeeper did not even move from his spot drew attention.

The Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) announced that an earthquake of magnitude 5.6 occurred around 09:00 in the Battalgazi district of Malatya. It was reported that the earthquake occurred at a depth of 7.03 kilometers.

The tremors were felt not only in Malatya but also in Diyarbakır, Gaziantep, Kahramanmaraş, Hatay, Elazığ, Osmaniye, Kayseri, Bingöl, Erzincan, Şanlıurfa, and Adana. Kandilli Observatory announced the earthquake's magnitude as the same and its depth as 4.4 kilometers.

Brief panic ensued in the city following the earthquake. Many citizens came out of their homes and workplaces. While students studying at schools were evacuated as a precaution, the Malatya Governorate announced that education across the province was suspended for 1 day.
