The Istanbul Governorship responded to the allegations of a "step back" in the public regarding stray animals with a written statement. The Governorship emphasized that the decisions taken are implemented within the framework of the Animal Protection Law No. 5199, stating that efforts to address the issue of stray animals are continuing uninterrupted and that there is no step back.
The Istanbul Governorship made a statement regarding the allegations of a "step back" that appeared in the public after the meeting of the Street Animals Protection Board held at the AFAD Istanbul Center. The Governorship stated that the said news and posts do not reflect the truth and emphasized that efforts are being carried out decisively within the framework of the Animal Protection Law No. 5199.
In the statement, it was noted that attacks originating from stray animals have serious consequences, and it was stated that the follow-up of the complete implementation of legal obligations for the solution of the problem is pursued. The Governorship reported that significant progress has been made in this area across Istanbul and that efforts continue uninterrupted.
"NO STEP BACK" MESSAGE
The Governorship clearly stated that there is no complacency or step back regarding street animals. The decisions taken at the board meeting were shared to prevent possible misconceptions in the public.
MUNICIPALITIES' OBLIGATION FOR SHELTERS AND NATURAL LIVING AREAS
Within the scope of the decisions, it was reminded that municipalities must use at least 50% of the budget they are required to allocate for shelters and natural living areas. It was requested that work in the allocated areas be completed quickly.
INVENTORY TRACKING FOR STRAY ANIMALS
It was decided that municipalities should conduct monthly inventory work on the number of stray dogs and transmit the data to the Directorate of Nature Conservation and National Parks. Regular entry of data into the HAYBIS system has been made mandatory.
NATURAL LIVING AREAS IN PENDIK AND TUZLA
The aim is to quickly complete and put into service the natural living areas under construction in Pendik and Tuzla, and to collect stray dogs in these areas.
SANCTIONS FOR MUNICIPALITIES NOT ALLOCATING BUDGET
It was reminded that legal sanctions will be applied to municipalities that do not allocate the necessary budget for shelter and veterinary services.
EMPHASIS ON ADOPTION AND INSPECTION
While encouraging businesses in organized industrial zones to contribute to the adoption process, it was stated that police and gendarmerie units will take measures against the unlawful abandonment of stray animals.
