The roof of a popular nightclub in Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic, collapsed. Thirteen people lost their lives, and 46 others were injured. The incident occurred around 2:00 AM local time at the entertainment venue called Jet Set. At the time of the collapse, the dance floor was crowded, and a live music performance was ongoing.
Thirteen people lost their lives and 46 were injured as a result of the roof collapse of a nightclub in Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic.
The incident occurred around 2:00 AM local time last night at the popular entertainment venue Jet Set. According to eyewitnesses, the roof suddenly collapsed while a live music performance was ongoing in the crowded dance floor.
In footage captured by someone inside the nightclub and quickly spread on social media, the dance floor is seen to be completely full just before the collapse. Another video recording shows moments when the ceiling fell on the musicians during the stage performance. Local media confirmed that the saxophonist of the band performing on stage was among the deceased.
Dominican Republic President Luis Abinader expressed his deep sorrow in a statement on his social media account, saying, "We are deeply saddened by the tragedy that occurred at the Jet Set nightclub. We have been closely monitoring the situation since the moment of the incident. Our prayers are with the affected families."
According to a report by El Dia newspaper, 77 ambulances, 8 fire trucks, and 30 civil defense personnel were dispatched to the area following the collapse. Approximately 200 police officers and 50 soldiers were also involved in the rescue efforts.
Local health authorities reported that those injured during the collapse were distributed to eight hospitals, including Cuba, Royal, Modern, and UCE medical centers, and that these hospitals went on red alert.
It is reported that some individuals are still trapped under the rubble and are communicating with rescue teams. Search and rescue operations are ongoing.
