As cold weather increases battery failures in Turkey, experts are warning drivers that the "whacking" method and incorrect jump-start connections can lead to timing belt breakage, electronic malfunctions, and engine damage.
The cold weather, which is increasing its impact across the country, continues to negatively affect vehicle owners. Experts state that as the air temperature drops, vehicle batteries lose power more quickly than usual. It is particularly noted that batteries weaken much faster when strong winds blow towards the front of the vehicle.
The rapid depletion of batteries in vehicles that are parked for long periods in cold weather is leading many drivers to seek alternative methods.
"BUMP STARTING" METHOD POSES DANGER
One of the most commonly used methods for vehicles with dead batteries, bump starting, can lead to costly engine damage, according to experts.
Serious malfunctions such as the breaking of the timing belt, damage to the chain, or harm to the oil pump can arise due to this method. The repair costs for such malfunctions can be a significant burden for drivers.
WRONG BOOST CONNECTION CAN BURN ELECTRONICS
On the other hand, it is warned that haphazard battery boosting procedures can cause significant damage to the vehicle's electronic components. Incorrect terminal connections can disable many parts, especially the electronic brain (ECU).
For this reason, it is emphasized that drivers should not intervene in their vehicles without knowledge.
"MAINTENANCE MUST BE DONE BEFORE WINTER"
Ufuk Çalışkan, an automotive master in Erzincan, provided important advice to drivers regarding the increasing battery problems in winter months. Çalışkan stated that vehicles should undergo thorough maintenance before each winter season and expressed the following:
"Incorrect interventions made in case of a dead battery can lead to very serious costs. Drivers should seek professional help instead of bump starting the vehicle and should be careful with battery boosting."
