The U.S. Department of Homeland Security announced that it will lift restrictions preventing the Iranian national football team from traveling to the country earlier for its next match in the 2026 World Cup.

RESTRICTION ON IRAN LIFTED

In a statement from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, it was stated that travel restrictions will be eased ahead of the Iranian national football team's final FIFA World Cup group stage match in Seattle on June 26. The statement indicated that the Iranian football team will be allowed to travel to Seattle two days before its match against Egypt on Friday, allowing the team an extra day in the U.S. compared to its first two matches.

COMPLAINT PLAN WORKED

However, it was noted that the team would still need to return to its main camp in Tijuana, Mexico, after the match. This change came after Iran's football federation announced it planned to file a formal complaint with FIFA regarding the treatment of the team during the tournament. Andrew Giuliani, head of the White House FIFA task force, said in recent days that discussions on changing the policy were ongoing.

The U.S. initially did not allow the Iranian team to camp in Arizona amid uncertainty in peace talks between Washington and Tehran, leading to the camp being moved to the Tijuana area on the U.S.-Mexico border in late May.
