Education was suspended for 4 days in the Birecik and Viranşehir districts due to heavy damage caused by the severe downpour and supercell storm that affected Şanlıurfa yesterday.
Education has been suspended for 4 days in the Birecik and Viranşehir districts of Şanlıurfa due to damages caused by the storm.
The hail and supercell storm that hit Şanlıurfa last evening primarily caused disruptions in Birecik, Siverek, Suruç, and Viranşehir. The disaster caused severe damage in the city, and schools were also affected. The Şanlıurfa Governorate announced that education has been suspended to repair the damages.
SCHOOLS CLOSED IN TWO DISTRICTS OF ŞANLIURFA
The statement included the following: "Considering the damages caused by adverse weather conditions on 03.05.2026 to school buildings and gardens, and the need to repair and restore them to be ready for education;
Education and training have been suspended for (4) days starting from Tuesday, May 5, 2026, in all educational institutions in our Birecik and Viranşehir districts. Respectfully announced to the public."
1 PERSON DIED, 40 WERE INJURED
Meanwhile, in a statement made yesterday by the Şanlıurfa Governorate regarding the extent of the damage, the following was stated: "The sudden heavy downpour and strong storm in our Birecik district caused the uprooting of many trees and damage to building roofs, as well as local flooding. In these incidents, 1 citizen lost their life, and 29 citizens were injured in various ways. 7 of our injured were transferred to hospitals in the city center.
Treatments for 22 of our injured are continuing at Birecik State Hospital. Additionally, the sudden heavy downpour and storm in our Viranşehir district caused similar adversities, resulting in 11 citizens being lightly injured. From the very first moment, interventions were carried out by the district municipality, the Metropolitan Municipality, ŞUSKİ, AFAD, our security units, and other relevant institutions. Works in the field are continuing in a coordinated manner.
We extend our condolences to the family of our deceased citizen and all our fellow citizens, and we wish a speedy recovery to our injured. We offer our best wishes to all our citizens affected by the adverse weather conditions. Education and training have been suspended for 1 day in all educational institutions in our Birecik and Viranşehir districts. Additionally, personnel with special needs, pregnant women, and those with chronic illnesses will be granted administrative leave for 1 day."
