The owner of X, American billionaire Elon Musk, accused the Australian government, which plans to restrict access to social media platforms for children under the age of 16, of "trying to control access to the internet."
Musk reacted to the Canberra government's plan to impose a 16-year age limit on social media platforms.
Quoting Prime Minister Anthony Albanese's announcement that the age limit bill has been presented to parliament, Musk stated, "This seems like a covert way to control access to the internet for all citizens in Australia." DEMAND FOR AGE LIMIT FOR CHILDREN ON SOCIAL MEDIAThe government in Australia is preparing to impose an age limit for children to start using social media and hold platforms accountable for compliance. It is planned to penalize social media platforms in case of violations of the age limit. THE "FRICTION" BETWEEN MUSK AND ALBANESEFollowing the knife attacks on April 13 and 15, the Australian e-Security Office had applied to the federal court for a temporary global ban on X users' access to the attack footage. While the court ruled to temporarily halt access to the footage, X officials, who rejected this request, announced that they would respond to Australia's "illegal and dangerous" approach in court. Prime Minister Albanese reacted to the platform's refusal to remove the footage related to the attacks, expressing surprise that X was fighting the request in court. After the court's decision, Musk also accused the Australian administration of imposing "censorship on all countries."
