Recently, nostalgic household items are being sold at exorbitant prices on internet platforms. Experts have noted that these items do not have any antique value and have warned citizens to be cautious.

In ancient times, some items used in many people's homes are being sold online on certain platforms at exorbitant prices under the name "antique" or "nostalgic product."

While these products attract the attention of those longing for nostalgia, this situation raises the question in many people's minds: "Can I also sell these family heirloom products that I have kept in a corner of my home or stored in my chest for such a high price?"

"PRICES ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE"

Antique dealer Tülay Feza stated that she was astonished by the advertisements for cups and curtains being sold at high prices.

Emphasizing that the prices of the products are not acceptable, Feza said:

"Can a synthetic fabric cost millions of lira? It's a simple textile product. We just talk and laugh among ourselves. I sold a set of about 80 pieces of those famous yellow cups to Iranian tourists for 3,000 lira three days ago. After selling the product, someone wanted to bring the cups from the set to sell, but I said, 'No, I'm not interested.' There is not enough market for it; I didn't want to take it to my workplace. These products are from 30-40 years ago and have entered almost every home. There are certain criteria for being an antique. A product that has been kept cannot be an antique."

"EVERYONE THINKS THEY ARE VERY VALUABLE"

Antique item seller Filiz Sertay stated that the products sold at high prices are vintage items used by many people's family elders, found under beds.

Stating that the cups are produced in the USA and Mexico and that they come to Turkey mostly through Europe, Sertay said, "The prices I see on the internet are astronomical. I have a shop and I also go to the antique market. The price I give for the coffee-sized ones is between 800-900 lira. The ones that are American products are also sold for 1,500 lira. The Mexican ones are 1,000 lira."

"SALES FIGURES ARE NOT ACCURATE"

Sertay noted that everyone who sees these advertisements on online sales platforms and social media wants to evaluate these items found in their homes, but the prices written do not correspond to reality.

Indicating that there are valuable handmade and hand-painted cups from Europe and Russia in antique shops, Sertay stated: "Quality cups that people have put effort into, painted one by one and fired, are sold at those prices. These are not cups of that value. When we go to the market, people who see the cups say, 'I had one in my dowry, I threw it away, my grandmother had one too.' They ask the price and either want to sell it to us or go and put it up for sale online themselves. I say I can buy it if the price I offer satisfies you. But no one approaches that because everyone thinks they are very valuable."

Sertay emphasized that the prices of curtains do not reflect reality, stating that apart from those who collect special items or shoot period films, no one would pay high amounts for this product.

"A 30-40 YEAR OLD CURTAIN HAS NO VALUE"

Antique and vintage item seller Mehmet Özdemir also stated that these products do not carry monetary value. He expressed that old products that are rare and have a feature can be considered antiques, saying, "These are products that are abundant in the market and have nothing to do with antiques. These prices are nothing but deceiving the public. People should not be fooled; if they buy, they will be deceived. Cups with gold glitter that are over 100 years old - we call those antiques - have value. A 30-40 year old curtain has no value. Then, there will be a curtain from every house. I also have cups and I sell them for 500 lira." he said.

Fatma Aktaş, who sells old clothes and products, stated that curtains do not have antique value and that they see periodic interest, but the prices are not realistic.

Aktaş expressed that the cups are somewhat sought after because they are rare, saying, "For these products to be considered antiques, they need to be rare and old. However, they are not worth the prices written. We see these products in the antique dealer's car wandering in the back streets."

"ONE MUST ALWAYS BE SUSPICIOUS OF EXCESSIVELY HIGH PRICE OFFERS"

Aziz Koçal, the President of the Consumers Confederation (TÜKON), stated that people generally long for the past, emphasizing that this emotional bond should not lead sellers to assign high values to products.

Koçal stated that the sale of products with unrealistic prices on social media should not be encouraged, providing the following information about what consumers should pay attention to: For such products, the product should be seen physically and a specialist should be consulted. Consumers should research what similar products are sold for on different platforms. One must always be suspicious of excessively high price offers. Care should be taken to shop on reliable platforms. While nostalgia and the desire to collect can increase the value of some products, it also brings the risk of fraud. Therefore, it is important to conduct thorough research and seek expert opinions before making a decision.
