A forest fire that started around Zingaro National Park on Italy's Sicily Island quickly grew and threatened residential areas. Due to the fire, tourists left the island, and two houses were completely burned down.

The "Zingaro" National Park, a tourist destination near Scopello in the Trapani province on the western side of Italy's Sicily Island, has been reported to have some tourists leaving the area due to a forest fire that started yesterday and grew during the night, approaching residential areas.

The fire, which spread over a wide area due to the wind, was intervened by firefighters, forestry workers, civil defense teams, and volunteers throughout the night, and with the first light of morning, two firefighting planes also joined the extinguishing efforts.

Currently, due to the summer season and holiday period, tourists in the area have also left because of the fire's growth.

50 FIRES IN A WEEK

In the green area between the cities of Trapani and Palermo on the western side of the island, more than 50 fires have broken out since the beginning of the week, some of which have threatened certain residential areas in towns like Partinico, Grisi, and Alcamo. In the fire near Grisi, two houses became unusable.

43,400 FOOTBALL FIELDS OF LAND BURNED IN 7 MONTHS

In a report released today by the Italian environmental organization Legambiente, it was stated that 653 forest fires occurred in the country between January 1 and July 18.

The report indicated that 30,988 hectares of land, equivalent to 43,400 football fields, burned in these fires, meaning that an average of 3.3 fires occurred daily, burning an area of 47.5 hectares.

The report emphasized that the fire situation in Italy raised an "alarm" in 2025, noting that the southern regions of the Italian peninsula, especially islands like Sicily and Sardinia, were adversely affected by forest fires.
