In the South American country of Bolivia, 20 people have lost their lives and 24 are missing due to a flood disaster caused by heavy rainfall.
Heavy rains that began on Saturday in the Santa Cruz region of eastern Bolivia caused the Pirai River to overflow. Flooding occurred in El Torno and surrounding towns. Deputy Minister of Civil Defense Alfredo Troche stated that 20 people have died and 24 are missing.
THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE EVACUATED FROM THE AREA
Troche reported that at least 300 people have been rescued by helicopter, and approximately 2,100 families have been evacuated from around the Pirai River so far. Authorities expect that rescue operations will become easier in the coming days as weather conditions improve and water levels decrease.
