Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan made evaluations regarding developments in the Middle East to the Qatar-based Al Jazeera television. Minister Fidan pointed out that Turkey's military presence in Syria has two objectives: the first is to prevent further mass migration to Turkey, and the second is to combat terrorism. "IF THESE 2 ISSUES ARE RESOLVED, THERE WILL BE NO REASON FOR US TO STAY"Fidan emphasized that Turkey will have no reason to remain in Syria if these two issues are resolved, and he stated that the right steps are currently being taken in this direction. "WE SEE THE NEW ADMINISTRATION AS A LEGITIMATE COUNTERPART"Minister Fidan indicated that time should be given to observe the course of the situation in Syria, noting that the new administration is seen as a legitimate counterpart and that communication has begun with them. "THERE IS A SLOW INCREASE IN THE NUMBER OF RETURNING REFUGEES"Fidan stated that it is hoped that Syrian refugees in Turkey will evaluate the new environment in their country and return voluntarily and safely, saying, "Of course, their desire to return is welcomed." Fidan mentioned that there has been a slow increase in the number of Syrian refugees returning to their country, expressing his belief that as more stability and a safer environment are observed, more people will return. Minister Fidan said, "But it is still too early for that."
