DECISION ON FORMER AK PARTY DEPUTY KOCABIYIK

Former AK Party İzmir Deputy Hüseyin Kocabıyık's trial, in which he faces up to 8 years in prison for the charges of 'insulting the president' and 'defamation,' continued. During the hearing held at the Istanbul 46th Criminal Court of First Instance, the detained defendant Kocabıyık participated via the Audio and Visual Information System (SEGBİS), while his lawyers were present in the courtroom.

"CRIMES INVENTED BY DISTORTION"

Kocabıyık stated in his defense, "A car full of police raided my house at the crack of dawn. They searched my house recklessly and seized my phone. If I had been invited, wouldn't I have gone to give a statement? I want to express how upset I am." He continued in his defense, "Crimes have been invented by distortion. It has not been explained why any of my statements are considered crimes. It is unclear what is considered a crime in the distorted sentences. I am not essentially an oppositional person. I lead my life in favor of justice. If the law bends, the state collapses; if criticism is silenced, society becomes blind. I have committed none of the alleged crimes."

HE WAS RELEASED

The public prosecutor, who presented his opinion during the hearing, requested that Kocabıyık be punished for 'publicly insulting the president' and 'defamation' on the grounds that he "exceeded the limits of criticism and freedom of expression," and that his detention should continue. After the opinion was presented, the court announced its decision, sentencing Kocabıyık to 2 years, 5 months, and 5 days in prison for the charge of 'insulting the president.' With the ruling, defendant Kocabıyık was released.
