According to a report by Sabah, the security guard İ.A.'s lawyer appealed the case, and the file was taken to the appellate court. During the ruling hearing at the 20th Criminal Chamber of the Istanbul Regional Court of Justice, defendant Ümit Karan stated, "I have never wronged anyone in my life. The accusations are not true."
Ümit Karan continued his defense in the hearing at the 20th Criminal Chamber of the Regional Court of Justice with the following words: "I have served this country. I have never wronged anyone in my life. I am a supporter of Atatürk. If you are going to punish me for being a supporter of Atatürk, I accept it." Upon Karan's words, the Court President Ersoy Yüce asked, "Are supporters of Atatürk being punished?" To this, Karan's lawyer interjected, saying, "He is trying to say something else."
