MAYOR CO-CHAIRMAN DESCRIBED THE DISASTER

While the fire disaster has become a national agenda, Serra Bucak, Co-Chair of the Diyarbakır Metropolitan Municipality, stated in a recent announcement that the fire was a complete building fire caused by the electrical shaft void.

Bucak said, "It has been observed that there was a building fire on every floor of the 13-story building." She added, "The lack of any ventilation voids and windows in both the intermediate corridors and the fire escape unfortunately hindered smoke and heat evacuation. The absence of an automatic closing system for the fire escape doors, the lack of a ventilation void in the attic, and the observation that electrical cables were left piled up in the electrical shaft void, which is the cause of the fire, up to the roof have been noted.

Again, while the electrical shaft void should be completely open on each floor, the void that should be open according to regulations has been partially closed with concrete. There is concrete closure on every floor. Cables have been pulled by breaking from the corners. It has been observed that instead of non-flammable halogen-free cables, flammable PVC cables were used, and these cables were insufficient in terms of electrical carrying capacity. Unfortunately, it has been determined that the electrical shaft void was used as a storage area and various items were left there," she stated.
