The former Minister of Interior, National Education, Energy, Transportation, Customs, and Tourism, and Deputy Prime Minister in the 32nd Government of the Republic of Turkey, Nahit Menteşe, who represented Aydın in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) for 6 terms, has passed away. Menteşe, who had been receiving treatment in a hospital in Ankara for some time, closed his eyes to life at the age of 92. HE WILL BE BURIED AFTER THE CEREMONY AT TBMMIt has been learned that Menteşe's funeral will be held at the TBMM on Thursday, January 2, 2025, and after the funeral prayer following the noon prayer at Ahmet Hamdi Akseki Mosque, he will be buried in the State Elders Cemetery. WHO IS NAHİT MENTEŞE?Nahit Menteşe, born in 1932 in Milas, completed his primary and secondary education in Milas and his high school education at Aydın High School. After graduating from Istanbul University Faculty of Law, he held various managerial positions in different associations during his student years and served as the president of the Aydın Higher Student Association. Menteşe, who started his professional life as a lawyer in Aydın, was also involved in politics and social work. He held local positions such as membership in the Provincial General Assembly and membership in the Provincial Permanent Council. He also took on significant roles in social organizations such as the Red Crescent, Turkish Aeronautical Association, Child Protection Institution, and Aydın Sports Club. Nahit Menteşe entered the Grand National Assembly of Turkey as a Member of Parliament for Aydın in 1965 and was re-elected in the elections held in 1969, 1973, 1977, 1991, and 1995. During his tenure, he served as Minister of Customs and Monopoly (1968), Minister of Transportation (1969-1970, 1975-1977), Minister of Energy and Natural Resources (1971), Minister of Tourism and Promotion (1977), Minister of National Education (1977-1978, 1993), Minister of Interior (1993-1996), and Minister of State and Deputy Prime Minister (1996).
