German Inflation At 4.1% In September

13.10.2021 10:27

Base effects, rising energy and food prices main reasons for higher inflation rate.

Germany's annual consumer price inflation stood at 4.1% in September, unchanged compared with August, data showed on Wednesday.

"In July and August, it had been just under 4%. A higher inflation rate was last measured in December 1993 (+4.3%)," according to the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis).

"The relevant rate of price increase was up for the third month in a row. This was basically due to base effects as we compare current prices with the very low prices of the previous year," said Christoph-Martin Mai, head of the Consumer Prices Section at the Federal Statistical Office.

Especially the CO2 charge introduced at the beginning of the year had an upward effect on the rate of price increase regarding energy products, he underlined.

"Marked price increases were recorded for heating oil (+76,5%) and motor fuels (+28.4%). The prices of natural gas (+5.7%) and electricity rose, too," he said. -
