Germany announced that it will deploy a Patriot air defense system and approximately 150 soldiers to Turkey in the coming weeks to strengthen NATO’s southeastern flank. The German task force, set to take over from the current US unit in Turkey starting June 2026, will operate in close cooperation with the Turkish Armed Forces as part of NATO’s integrated air defense network until September 2026.
Germany will deploy Patriot air defense systems to Turkey in the coming weeks as part of its plan to strengthen NATO's southeastern flank defense capacity.
German officials stated that the mission aims to enhance NATO's airspace protection in the region.
The "Air and Missile Defense Task Force," to be established within the German Armed Forces, is expected to work in close cooperation with the Turkish Armed Forces.
The German Ministry of Defense announced that the deployment will be carried out within the framework of NATO's integrated air and missile defense system.
WILL REPLACE THE US UNIT
German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius emphasized that the mission is part of NATO's burden-sharing, highlighting that Germany is taking on greater responsibility within the alliance.
Pistorius stated that the Patriot unit and approximately 150 soldiers to be deployed will replace the US unit currently stationed in Turkey.
EMPHASIS ON AIR DEFENSE CONTRIBUTION
Pistorius, noting that the German Air Force is performing a respected international mission, referred to previous mission experiences and said, "With their professionalism, they will make a significant contribution to the protection of NATO airspace."
According to the current plan, the German Patriot unit will begin its mission in June 2026 and remain deployed in Turkey until September 2026. During the mission, the unit will operate integrated into NATO's air and missile defense network.
