Greece has declared a state of emergency on the island of Karpathos in the Aegean Sea, amid concerns that the expected influx of visitors with the start of the summer tourism season will deepen the existing water crisis. The emergency decision, taken after water levels in dams dropped to critical limits, will remain in effect across the island for three months.

According to a report by Greek state television ERT, the state of emergency was declared on the island of Karpathos in the Aegean Sea because of declining water levels in the dam and anticipated increases in water consumption by the summer season.

The decision, made by Greece's Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy, will be valid for a period of 3 months.

It was stated that the state of emergency aims to accelerate the measures and related processes taken to combat the water shortage on the island.
