The tragic end of 43-year-old Brandon Durham, who lived in Nevada, began when he called the police for help after a burglar entered his home.
Durham called the Las Vegas Police Department at 12:40 AM on Tuesday, reporting that two people were shooting outside his home and trying to enter. He stated that he was inside the house with his 15-year-old daughter and would hide in the bathroom.
Body camera footage from the police officers who arrived in Henderson shows them kicking open Durham's door. 26-year-old Officer Alexander Bookman drew his weapon and advanced down a narrow hallway.
The footage shows a struggle between a man in his underwear (Durham) and someone in a red hoodie (the burglar Alejandra Boudreaux). Bookman fired just two seconds after shouting, "Drop the knife," hitting Durham in the head. Even after Durham and Boudreaux fell to the ground, Bookman fired five more shots.
The police investigation revealed that 31-year-old Boudreaux had planned to provoke the police into killing her by entering the home with a weapon ("suicide by cop"). Security camera footage shows Boudreaux waiting outside for 10 minutes before entering the house.
Durham's family claims that the person holding the knife was not Durham, but rather that he was trying to stop Boudreaux. His daughter Isabella said, "My dad was definitely a victim. I will now spend the rest of my life without my father."
Durham's partner Rachael Gore stated, "You call the police for help, and you get killed. This should not have happened to him; he was a good man."
The Las Vegas Police Department has initiated an internal investigation regarding the incident. Bookman, who has been on duty since 2021, is currently on paid administrative leave. The Clark County District Attorney's Office will decide whether to file charges against the officer.
Friends of Durham have launched an online fundraising campaign to help his daughter Isabella and family. So far, the campaign has raised $9,800.
