A man named Mehmet Şiyar Ecevit, who killed his wife Vatfa Ecevit, 25, with 17 stab wounds on the day she was discharged from the hospital after giving birth to a baby girl in Mardin, was sentenced to life imprisonment without parole for the crime of 'intentional murder of a spouse' in the trial where he was held in custody. Vatfa Ecevit, who gave birth to a baby girl at Mardin Training and Research Hospital on January 19, was discharged. Upon returning home, Vatfa Ecevit was stabbed 17 times by her husband Mehmet Şiyar Ecevit during an argument. During the incident, Mehmet Şiyar Ecevit's mother was also injured in the hand. Vatfa Ecevit, who was taken to Mardin Training and Research Hospital by the ambulance called, could not be saved. The body of Vatfa Ecevit, a mother of two, was buried in the neighborhood after the autopsy procedures. Mehmet Şiyar Ecevit, who was taken into custody, was arrested. "I CANNOT MEET MY OWN NEEDS"A case was opened against Mehmet Şiyar Ecevit for the crime of 'intentional murder of a spouse'. The second hearing of the case, which is being heard at the Mardin 3rd High Criminal Court, was held. The defendant Mehmet Şiyar Ecevit claimed in his defense during the hearing that he had taken drugs at the time of the incident, stating, "I have no defense, I did not do it consciously. I want to be sent to the Forensic Medicine Institution. I cannot see, my eyes do not see. It has been like this since birth. I cannot meet my own needs. I ask for mercy from the esteemed judiciary. Whatever my punishment is, I will serve it. I used drugs excessively. I was in a fit of rage, I remember stabbing 3-4 times. I ask for mercy from the esteemed judiciary," he said. NO REDUCTION IN SENTENCE WAS APPLIEDIn the court where the prosecutor presented his opinion, the defendant Mehmet Şiyar Ecevit was sentenced to life imprisonment without parole for the crime of 'intentional murder of a spouse'. After the hearing, Lawyer Seher Acay, the President of the Mardin Bar Association Women's Rights Center, stated, "The trial of a femicide has concluded. At the end of the trial, the defendant received life imprisonment for 'murder of a spouse' and no reduction was applied."
