On December 1st, around 16:00, an incident occurred at a jewelry store in the Karagümrük neighborhood of Fatih, Istanbul. A suspect, who had been observing the jeweler for a while, then entered the shop with a paving stone in hand. The suspect broke the glass counter of the jeweler with the paving stone and attempted to steal the gold. At that moment, the shop's door automatically locked, preventing the suspect from escaping. The suspect was caught by other customers in the shop and the jeweler and was handed over to the police. "WE ARE GOING THROUGH VERY DIFFICULT TIMES"The business owner, Cemal Seyit, stated, "While I was attending to a customer in the shop, a person entered. He hit the glass counter with a large stone. We thought he was committing theft. We then subdued him. The door locked from behind. He tried to escape but couldn't. Afterwards, we informed the police. The police teams came and took him into custody. We are going through very difficult times because we are in the jewelry business. I couldn't understand it at first. There were 7 of us, including customers. We were in shock. We managed to gather ourselves and subdue the person. It was a terrifying experience. We have never experienced anything like this before. We felt very bad. With unemployment and financial difficulties, theft incidents are increasing even more. The incidents that happen during the day are different, and we also face problems at night. They are trying to break into our shops. As tradespeople, we are going through a lot of difficulties. We are at a loss about what to do. We are trying to take our own precautions, but we don't know how long we can endure. A moment of distraction can give them the power to do anything," he said. THE INCIDENT WAS RECORDED BY SECURITY CAMERASThe attempted theft was also recorded second by second by the shop's security cameras. The footage shows the suspect observing the jeweler, then entering and breaking the glass counter, and the moments when he could not escape because the door was automatically locked.
