A driver who stopped his car to greet police officers conducting an operation in Burdur was asked to take a breathalyzer test after his movements aroused suspicion. The driver, who resisted blowing into the breathalyzer saying 'I just wanted to say keep up the good work,' turned out to have 3.28 promil alcohol. He lost his driver's license and was fined 50,000 lira.
During the night hours on the Burdur-Fethiye highway, routine traffic inspections witnessed a rare and equally tragicomic incident. The driver of the moving vehicle with license plate 06 BM 5435, Cengiz Y., despite coming from the opposite direction, changed his route and stopped behind the checkpoint where police teams were stationed.
"IS THIS HOW YOU TREAT MY COURTESY?"
The driver got out of the car to greet the officers and wish them well, but his erratic behavior did not escape the attention of experienced traffic police. Suspecting alcohol, the teams checked his identity and then asked the driver to blow into a breathalyzer. Upon seeing the device, Cengiz Y. was greatly surprised and refused to blow, complaining to the police with these striking words:
"Is this how you treat my courtesy? I just came to say 'good luck' out of politeness. I only came here to assist the law enforcement."
FOUND TO BE 6 TIMES THE LEGAL ALCOHOL LIMIT
Attempting to buy time by making sarcastic remarks even to the hair and beards of journalists and police at the scene, the driver, who admitted to being drunk but resisted the test, was eventually persuaded after lengthy efforts by the officers. When Cengiz Y. blew into the breathalyzer, he was found to have 3.28 promil alcohol—approximately 6 times the legal limit.
50 THOUSAND LIRA FINE AND LICENSE CONFISCATED
A background check and record search revealed a more serious dimension to the incident. The driver had previously been caught twice for drunk driving. Cengiz Y., who caused difficulties for the teams, was fined a total of 50 thousand lira for traffic violations, and his driver's license was confiscated for 2 years. The night's "courteous" but rule-breaking driver was taken to the police station for processing and testimony.
