After two devastating earthquakes measuring 7.9 and 6.4 that struck Myanmar, on the third day of rescue efforts, according to the military administration, at least 1,700 people have lost their lives, over 3,400 have been injured, and 300 are still missing. The earthquake has damaged critical infrastructure such as roads and communication networks, and it has been reported that aid has not been able to reach many areas. There are concerns that the death toll may rise due to the presence of missing people under the rubble in the affected regions.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the organization that monitors earthquakes worldwide, a 5.1 magnitude aftershock occurred in the town of Mattara, 28 km northwest of Mandalay, at 15:38 local time.

THE MILITARY GOVERNMENT CONTINUES TO BOMB SOME AREAS

In a country still dominated by civil war, the armed wing of the exiled government, the National Unity Government (NUG), declared a two-week ceasefire to facilitate the delivery of urgently needed aid. The military government issued a "rare" call for aid. While the military government continues to bomb some areas, the UN described these attacks as "completely ugly and unacceptable."

MEDICAL SUPPLIES SHORTAGE

United Nations (UN) affiliated aid groups have warned of a serious shortage of medical supplies. Michael Dunford, the World Food Program's (WFP) country director in Myanmar, stated in an interview with the British television channel BBC that the humanitarian organization will begin its first food distributions in the capital Naypyitaw.

"WE NEED AN END TO THE CONFLICT"

Dunford noted that the WFP has teams heading towards Mandalay in Sagaing, highlighting the complexity of the factors that make it difficult to provide aid, stating, "We are really struggling to intervene. We need an end to the conflict... We need access to humanitarian aid and we need the capability to scale up our operations immediately," he said. Dunford added that their primary concerns for those rescued from the rubble are providing food, water, health, sanitation, and shelter.
