Seven people lost their lives and ten were injured after water and debris filled a tunnel under construction at a hydroelectric plant in northern India. Search and rescue operations are ongoing for more than 20 people still trapped.
The toll is worsening in the tunnel collapse disaster at a hydroelectric power plant under construction in the Uttarakhand state of India. Water and debris suddenly flooded the construction site in the Chamoli district yesterday evening.
While more than 20 workers working inside the tunnel were trapped during the flood, a search and rescue operation was launched in the region immediately after the incident.
DEATH TOLL RISES TO 7
Health official Dr. Ayush, who faced the press early in the morning, shared the initial toll after the intense efforts. Dr. Ayush confirmed that 7 workers removed from the tunnel by the teams had lost their lives. The 10 workers rescued with injuries were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.
"WORK CONTINUES UNINTERRUPTED"
Following the developments, Uttarakhand State Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami made a statement on social media. In his post, Chief Minister Dhami stated, "Efforts continue unabated to rescue the other workers trapped in the tunnel without harm," emphasizing that rescue teams are racing against time.
Despite the challenging weather and terrain conditions in the region, search and rescue activities continue uninterruptedly to reach the other workers underground.

Authorities announced that water and debris filled the tunnel construction of the hydroelectric power plant in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand state yesterday evening, leaving more than 20 workers trapped. Following the incident, a large-scale search and rescue operation was launched in the tunnel.
Dr. Ayush, one of the health officials in the region, stated in his morning press statement that 7 people removed from the tunnel had died, and 10 people rescued with injuries were taken under treatment.
