Bedirhan Şener, the son of former Deputy Prime Minister and former ministers Abdüllatif Şener, killed his grandmother Leyla Çetiner after taking her hostage. Abdüllatif Şener, who witnessed the horrific incident, stated in his initial statement, "My son, who has psychological problems, shot without even knowing that the person in front of him was his grandmother. We are very sorry. It is a tragic event. The allegations that my son killed his mother are not true."
A discussion took place between Bedirhan Şener, the son of former minister Abdüllatif Şener, and his grandmother Leyla Çetiner at their home in Ayrancı neighborhood in Ankara. During the argument, Bedirhan Şener took his grandmother Leyla Çetiner hostage at gunpoint.
SPECIAL OPERATIONS POLICE ALSO ARRIVED Abdüllatif Şener, upon learning about the incident, called the police to report the situation. Many police teams were dispatched to the scene, and special operations police also arrived due to the hostage situation. Bedirhan Şener shot and killed Çetiner as the argument escalated. The police arrested Bedirhan Şener.
"WE ARE VERY SORRY, A TERRIBLE INCIDENT" Abdüllatif Şener, speaking to Sözcü newspaper after the chilling incident, said, "My son, who has psychological problems, fired without knowing that the person in front of him was his grandmother. We are very sorry. It's a terrible incident. The allegations that my son killed his mother are not true," he said.
Bedirhan Şener WHO IS ABDÜLLATİF ŞENER? Abdüllatif Şener was born in 1954 in Yıldızeli district of Sivas. His father's name is Bedirhan and his mother's name is Ahzerat. He graduated from Sivas Imam Hatip High School and completed his undergraduate education at Ankara University Faculty of Political Sciences, Department of Economics and Finance in 1977. He started his academic career as a research assistant at Bolu Sevk and İdarecilik Vocational School affiliated with Ankara Academy of Economic and Commercial Sciences and continued his academic career by doing a doctorate in the field of Finance Theory at Gazi University. He became the deputy dean at Gazi University Bolu Faculty of Economic and Administrative Sciences. He served as a faculty member in the Department of Finance at Hacettepe University Faculty of Economic and Administrative Sciences. He worked as an income controller at the Ministry of Finance.
Former Minister Abdüllatif Şener. He was among the founders of the AK Party, which was established in 2001. He was elected as a member of parliament for Sivas in the 2002 general elections. He served as a state minister and deputy prime minister in the Abdullah Gül Government and Erdoğan Government between 2002 and 2007. He did not run for office in the elections held in 2007 and resigned from the AK Party. He founded the Turkey Party on May 25, 2009. Before the 2011 general elections in Turkey, he resigned from the leadership of his party and ran as an independent candidate for parliament from Sivas, but he was not elected. The Turkey Party, which he founded, closed on August 27, 2012. He was elected as a member of parliament from Konya from the Republican People's Party in the 2018 general elections. He speaks French.
