The leader of the CHP, Özgür Özel, announced that 2 million people attended the rally in İzmir. However, security sources and the AK Party İzmir Provincial Chairman Bilal Saygılı claimed that the attendance was limited to approximately 70,000 people.
The "Defending the Will of the Nation" rally organized by the Republican People's Party in İzmir has sparked political polemics regarding the attendance figures. CHP Chairman Özgür Özel claimed in his speech at the rally that the attendance was over 2 million. Özel emphasized the size of the crowd by saying, "I am saying this while looking into the eyes of over 2 million İzmir residents, Mayor Ekrem is innocent."
POLICE SOURCES ANNOUNCED "70 THOUSAND"
Police sources, however, stated that the number of participants in the rally was approximately 70 thousand. AK Party İzmir Provincial Chairman Bilal Saygılı shared the same assessment. Saygılı claimed that there was intense organization from surrounding provinces for the rally, stating, "The crowd that the CHP expected did not come, and the square remained largely empty."
The mention of two different numbers in the field has also brought discussions about the impact of the rally in the public sphere. While the CHP argues that the rally is a strong example of solidarity against political pressures, the AK Party side has labeled this claim as "perception management."
