After the severe downpour that affected Istanbul, Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) Deputy Mayor Nuri Aslan, who inspected the flood-affected areas, said that the city had received its heaviest rainfall in the last 80-85 years. Describing what happened as a major disaster, Aslan emphasized the importance of institutions and citizens acting in solidarity during this process.
Nuri Aslan, Acting Mayor of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB), met with tradespeople and citizens in areas affected by the flood in the city.
"THE HEAVIEST RAINFALL IN THE LAST 80-85 YEARS"
In his statement, Aslan conveyed his wishes for a speedy recovery for Istanbul and expressed his hope that such a disaster would never happen again.
Noting that Istanbul had not received such rainfall for about 100 years, Aslan emphasized that according to meteorological data first recorded in 1941, the city received its heaviest rainfall in the last 80-85 years.
“I HOPE WE WILL NOT FACE SUCH DAMAGE AGAIN IN THE NEXT PERIOD”
Stating that it made him happy that this disaster process was overcome without any politics being involved, Aslan continued as follows: "Because disasters are common denominators on which society comes together. I thank everyone because all my brothers and sisters stood together for Istanbul. But I must also remind you of something. It was a great disaster; everyone saw it, Istanbul saw it, all of Turkey saw it, it was shown on televisions, but Beşiktaş Square was not flooded, Üsküdar Square was not flooded. So we are moving forward with a municipal approach that learns from the past and improves itself. I hope that with what we have experienced today and what we experienced yesterday, and with the measures we will take in the event of a possible rainstorm or heavy rainfall in the next period, we will not encounter such damage here again, and I thank you."
