The dangerous moments when the raging waters dragged the container like a toy were captured moment by moment on a mobile phone camera.
The heavy thunderstorm affecting Istanbul has paralyzed daily life in Beşiktaş. As the rain intensified rapidly, streets and avenues turned into lakes, and moments when a huge garbage container was swept away by raging floodwaters, rapidly drifting along the street, were captured on citizens' mobile phone cameras.
STREETS AND AVENUES TURNED INTO LAKES: DRIVERS EXPERIENCED DIFFICULT MOMENTS
The heavy downpour, which started in the morning in Istanbul and intensified by midday, strained the infrastructure in many parts of the city. Due to the sudden rain in the Beşiktaş district, manholes overflowed, and water flowing down steep slopes created large puddles on the streets. Drivers and pedestrians faced great difficulty moving on the roads because of the intense water flow, resulting in long traffic queues.
CONTAINER SURRENDERED TO THE WATERS
During the most intense moments of the rainfall, striking scenes occurred on one of the steep streets in Beşiktaş. A large garbage container on the street could not withstand the force of the floodwaters coming from above and overturned.
The container was swept away by the raging currents for meters. Citizens in the vicinity were greatly concerned about the risk of the container hitting vehicles or pedestrians, and these dangerous moments were recorded second by second on mobile phone cameras.
Municipal and İSKİ teams dispatched to the region are continuing water drainage and cleaning efforts without interruption.
