A 12-year-old girl missing since Saturday in the Indian state of West Bengal was found dumped in a pond inside a sack after being raped. Following the news of the atrocity, the public took to the streets, beating a suspect they caught to death. The severely injured suspect died, and security forces were put on high alert due to the massive protests that erupted in the area.
An outrageous incident occurred in Baruipur city, South 24 Parganas district, in the Indian state of West Bengal. The 12-year-old girl, living in the Surjyapur area, left home on Saturday afternoon to buy a gift for her friend's birthday, but never returned. The search efforts carried out by her family and relatives throughout the night ended bitterly on Sunday morning.
LIFELESS BODY FOUND IN A SACK IN A POND On Sunday morning, suspicious locals caught a suspect and interrogated him. Following the suspect's confession, residents found the lifeless body of the little girl, stuffed in a sack, by the edge of a pond in the Surjyapur Haat area.
Family members alleged that the unfortunate child was kidnapped, raped, and then killed. The family also claimed that the police did not respond quickly enough to their requests for help when reporting the disappearance.
ANGRY MOB LYNCHES THE MURDERER After the little girl's lifeless body was pulled from the water, the public took to the streets in Baruipur. Angry family members and residents attacked the suspect who had shown the location. The suspect, severely beaten by the mob, died from his serious injuries at the hospital where he was taken.
The discovery of the girl's body led to major protests; residents blocked the road and burned tires. Police Director General Kankarprasad Barui confirmed that the suspect was lynched and killed by the angry mob.
AREA TURNS INTO A WAR ZONE, POLICE VEHICLES DESTROYED Upon hearing about the brutality, the Baruipur-Joynagar road was blocked to traffic by protesters. Hundreds of people, blocking the road by burning tires, pelted and destroyed police vehicles that tried to intervene. Numerous additional police teams were deployed to calm the demonstrators, who demanded the immediate arrest and execution of all perpetrators involved in the crime.
Police Director General Barui addressed the public via a megaphone, asking for the blockade to be lifted, and assured that no one connected to the crime would be spared:
"Everyone linked to the crime will face the severest punishment under the law. You can be sure no one will be forgiven. Please allow the police to work so that justice is served."
SPECIAL TEAM FORMED, PRIME MINISTER PROMISES THE FAMILY After convincing the public, the little girl's body was sent to the hospital for autopsy, and the procedures were completed on Sunday night. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) was formed by the West Bengal government to examine the incident from all angles.
It was reported that a total of 4 people, including Shantanu Mandal, who is alleged to have been working for a local political party, have been detained as part of the investigation, and raids are ongoing. It was also learned that the Chief Minister of West Bengal contacted the victim's family, promising them full legal and moral support.
