In an archive document published by MİT dated 1942, it was revealed that the interpreter of the German Consulate in İzmir was conducting propaganda that Hitlerism was compatible with the spirit of Islam and was considered one of the most dangerous elements of German intelligence in the region.
THE INTERPRETER'S ACTIVITIES AT THE CONSULATE WERE CLOSELY MONITORED
In the document dated May 7, 1942, published in the "Documents" section of the "Private Collection" on MİT's website, a correspondence sent by the İzmir Central Command to the National Security Service (M.E.H./MAH) Directorate, the predecessor of MİT, was included. In the two-page document shared under the title "Letter sent from the İzmir Central Command to the MAH Directorate on May 7, 1942, regarding the propaganda activities carried out by the Turkish interpreter working at the German Consulate in İzmir," it was stated that the propaganda and intelligence activities of an interpreter working at the German Consulate were closely monitored.
"HITLERISM IS COMPATIBLE WITH THE SPIRIT OF ISLAM"
The document stated that the person in question "showed increasing activity every day in the fields of propaganda and intelligence" and noted that recently he had been using religious topics as a propaganda tool. The correspondence recorded that the interpreter claimed "there is a connection between Islam and Germanness" and tried to spread among his circle that "embracing Hitlerism is compatible with the spirit and religion of Islam."
The document also noted that the interpreter particularly tried to draw parallels between Adolf Hitler and the Prophet Muhammad, containing the following statements: "Focusing on Hitler and the Prophet Muhammad, he says that despite differences in context and time, what both did are identical, and he does not neglect to add that these claims are based on his deep studies of Islamic books."
"ONE OF THE MOST DANGEROUS AND ACTIVE ELEMENTS"
In the archive document, it was stated that the interpreter was considered "one of the most dangerous and active elements" of German intelligence in the region. It was reported that although he held an official position at the consulate, he spent most of his time in public places such as coffeehouses, casinos, and similar venues, and being a native of İzmir, he could easily enter different circles without attracting attention. The document also mentioned that to prevent his activities, it was considered to recall him to active duty as a reserve artillery lieutenant, but an investigation revealed that "due to being born in 1910, he had no remaining military obligation."
