Additionally, it has been revealed that Dr. Erol V., who has been banned from the profession, does not have a clean record, as this is not his first incident.

The investigation into the death of 19-year-old Rojin Elveren, who died after a gastric sleeve surgery at a private hospital in Bağcılar, has been completed. In the indictment prepared against the two doctors who performed the surgery, General Surgery Specialist Erol V. and Anesthesia Specialist Volkan K. are facing a prison sentence of 2 to 6 years for "causing death by negligence."

In the investigation file, it was noted that Erol V., one of the doctors who performed the surgery, has been banned from practicing medicine, is a suspect in the "Newborn Gang" investigation, and was previously arrested in connection with another patient's death. It was also learned that the hospital where the surgery took place has been closed as part of the ongoing investigation.

HEART STOPPED

The incident occurred on July 12, 2023, in Bağcılar. Rojin Elveren, who underwent gastric surgery at the private hospital also mentioned in the Newborn Gang case, died due to cardiac arrest during the stomach reduction operation. The Bakırköy Chief Public Prosecutor's Office initiated an investigation against doctors Volkan K. and Erol V. due to the complications that occurred during Elveren's surgery and the inadequate and ineffective management of those complications.

NO EXAMINATIONS WERE CONDUCTED BEFORE THE SURGERY!

A report prepared by experts appointed by the Inspection Board Inspector indicated that Rojin Elveren, who weighed 103 kilograms, was admitted to the hospital for gastric sleeve surgery and that necessary examinations were not conducted prior to the surgery. It was noted that when the patient's condition was evaluated, it was understood that the deceased could have died from bleeding and that the operating physician did not perform the necessary and effective intervention.

REPORTS THAT NEEDED TO BE PREPARED WERE NOT PREPARED

The indictment revealed that the deceased first went to another hospital for surgery and then went to the mentioned private hospital upon the recommendation of Prof. Dr. Bülent K. It was also determined that the report that should have been prepared by specialists in general surgery, endocrinology, metabolic diseases, and mental health diseases was not prepared for Elveren, who entered the surgery weighing 103 kilograms. The incident began with bleeding during the mentioned surgery, and after intervention was made to Elveren, the surgery continued. It was stated that bleeding occurred again close to the end of the surgery, and despite the interventions, Elveren lost her life.

FORENSIC REPORT: DEATH DUE TO BLEEDING

In the opinion of the 8th Specialization Board of Forensic Medicine, it was stated that the condition resulting from major vascular injuries that developed during Elveren's gastric sleeve surgery occurred due to hemorrhagic shock. It was noted that the bleeding occurred at the beginning of the surgery and that the surgery continued instead of immediately calling a Cardiovascular Surgeon, leading to the conclusion that the actions of General Surgery Specialist Assoc. Dr. Erol V. and Anesthesia Specialist Dr. Volkan K. were not medically appropriate. The defendants stated in their defense that they did not accept the charges against them.

REQUEST FOR UP TO 6 YEARS IN PRISON

The indictment requested a prison sentence of 2 to 6 years for defendants Erol V. and Volkan K. for the crime of "causing death by negligence." Additionally, it was learned that Assoc. Dr. Volkan K. is also a suspect in the Newborn Gang case and that Erol V. was mentioned in the indictment of the Newborn Gang.

THIS IS NOT THE DOCTOR'S FIRST INCIDENT

Furthermore, it was learned that Erol V. is in custody in a different case related to the death of Semanur Aydın (23), who underwent gastric reduction surgery in Istanbul in 2023, despite his medical license being revoked. It was learned that the hospital where the surgery took place was closed as part of the "Newborn Gang" investigation, and that the incident came to light by examining the phone call records of hospital administrators as part of the investigation. A summary was prepared by the Organized Crimes and Terror Crimes Investigation Office of the Büyükçekmece Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, requesting prison sentences of 20 to 37 years for 7 suspects for the crimes of "Destruction, Concealment or Alteration of Evidence," "Intentional Killing by Negligent Behavior," and "Forgery in Official Documents."
