The number of fatalities in the border clashes between Thailand and Cambodia, which have intensified over the last three days, has risen to at least 16, prompting the controlled opening of the border gate for Cambodian workers to return to their country due to increasing security concerns.
CASUALTIES RISE TO 16 IN CLASHES BETWEEN THAILAND AND CAMBODIA
The death toll continues to rise in the clashes in the border region between Thailand and Cambodia. The number of casualties in the clashes has reached 16. As of this evening, the number of soldiers who lost their lives in the clashes on the Thai side has risen to 7, while Cambodian officials have not yet made an official statement regarding military casualties.
Cambodian Government Spokesperson Maly Socheata stated in a press conference that among the casualties, 9 civilians, including 1 baby, have lost their lives, and 48 people, including children, have been injured.
BORDER GATE OPENED FOR CAMBODIAN WORKERS
In Sa Kaeo province, located in eastern Thailand, the border gate has been opened for Cambodian citizens who wish to return to their country as soon as possible due to the escalating clashes. Thai officials reported that thousands of Cambodian workers in the region want to return to their country due to the clashes along the border, and many Cambodian citizens gathered at the border gate with their belongings. It was observed that groups continued to arrive at the border gate in the evening hours.
THAILAND'S "DEEP OPERATION" MESSAGE
In a statement made by the Royal Thai Air Force, it was indicated that they are ready to conduct a "deep operation" into the country if Cambodia continues to use heavy weapons. The statement noted that in the air operations that have been ongoing for three days with F-16 fighter jets belonging to the Thai Air Force, Cambodia's military command centers, drone control points, and weapons and ammunition depots have been targeted.
CURFEW DECLARED ALONG THE BORDER
The Thai army announced that a curfew has been declared in four districts of Sa Kaeo province, where clashes are intense along the border. In a statement made by military officials today at noon, it was stated that the decision was made to ensure the safety of the local population and to protect civilians from potential external threats. It was reported that civilians living in the mentioned four districts are prohibited from leaving their homes between 19:00 and 05:00 until further notice.
LONG-STANDING TENSIONS AT THE BORDER OF THE TWO COUNTRIES
Thai and Cambodian forces frequently confront each other due to sovereignty disputes along the approximately 817-kilometer land border drawn in the early 20th century. The recent escalation of tensions between the two countries in July turned into five days of violent clashes, resulting in at least 48 fatalities on both sides, with over 300,000 civilians affected by the incidents. Following the clashes, the prime ministers of the two countries met in July during the ASEAN Summit held in Malaysia, where a ceasefire agreement was signed with the participation of Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and U.S. President Donald Trump. However, after the ceasefire, Thailand announced last month that it had suspended the implementation of the ceasefire agreement due to several Thai soldiers being injured after stepping on landmines along the border and the Bangkok administration holding Cambodia responsible for those mines.
