Under Trump's strict immigration policy, a second group of immigrants consisting of dangerous criminals was transferred today to the high-security prison at Guantanamo Bay.
The inmates brought from El Paso, Texas, are members of the deadly Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua. Following the first flight that departed from Fort Bliss on Tuesday, a second shipment was carried out within 48 hours.
New footage released by the Department of Defense shows the inmates being unloaded from a military aircraft with their hands shackled. After a detailed search of the detainees on the runway, they were recorded being taken away in minibuses in the dark.
Among the 13 individuals brought today is a gang member convicted of murder and a fugitive wanted for armed robbery and attempted murder in Venezuela. The group's criminal record includes drug possession, robbery, assault, fraud, and illegal entry into the United States.
According to the plan announced last week, the base's immigrant detention center will be expanded to a capacity of 30,000 people. U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem stated, "President Trump is very clear: Guantanamo Bay will house the most dangerous criminals. This process starts today."
The administration is in talks with the Phoenix-based Willscot company regarding temporary facilities to house immigrants before their deportation. The facility will be managed by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and military personnel are already setting up tents to accommodate the newcomers.
Trump explained the rationale behind the decision: "Some immigrants are so dangerous that we can't even trust them to return to their own countries. Because we don't want them to go back. That's why we will send them to Guantanamo... It's a place that's very hard to get out of."
