The Insurance Information and Monitoring Center (SBM) announced the compulsory traffic insurance premiums valid for the July 2026 period. While premiums increased by 4 percent, the compulsory traffic insurance for a fourth-tier car in Istanbul rose to 18,789 lira. For commercial vehicles, the figures were noteworthy. The highest compulsory traffic insurance premium for buses with a capacity of 31 or more seats in Istanbul was set at 394,539 lira.

The Insurance Information and Monitoring Center (SBM) has published the maximum compulsory traffic insurance premiums effective as of July 2026.

According to the new tariff, compulsory traffic insurance premiums have been increased by 4 percent. Thus, the new prices concerning approximately 34 million vehicle owners have come into effect.

STANDARD PREMIUM IN ISTANBUL IS 18,789 LIRA

According to the new tariff, the compulsory traffic insurance premium to be paid by a car owner in the fourth tier in Istanbul has been set at 18,789 lira.

For internal combustion cars in the highest-risk group, the zeroth tier, the premium in Istanbul has risen to 56,367 lira, while drivers in the lowest-risk group, the eighth tier, will pay 9,395 lira.

In Ankara, the premium for the zeroth tier is 54,772 lira, and the eighth tier premium is 9,129 lira. In Izmir, the premium for the highest-risk drivers is 53,177 lira, while for those in the lowest-risk group, it is 8,863 lira.

TAXI AND BUS PREMIUMS ARE EVEN HIGHER

Premiums for commercial vehicles have reached notable levels. In Istanbul, the zeroth tier premium for commercial taxis is 160,593 lira, while in the eighth tier, this amount is set at 26,766 lira.

According to a report on NTV, for buses with a seating capacity of 31 or more, the highest premium in Istanbul rises to 394,539 lira, while the lowest premium is 65,757 lira.

PENALTIES AWAIT THOSE DRIVING WITHOUT INSURANCE

Drivers who take to the roads without compulsory traffic insurance will face an administrative fine of 1,246 lira for 2026 if detected during police checks.

Additionally, the vehicle may be impounded until insurance is obtained.

If an uninsured vehicle is involved in an accident, the driver will both pay a fine of 2,039 lira and have to cover the damages caused to the other party themselves.

THOSE WHO DELAY WILL PAY EXTRA EACH MONTH

Vehicle owners who fail to renew their compulsory traffic insurance on time will incur a surcharge of 5 percent on the policy premium for every 30 days of delay.

This late payment surcharge can total up to 50 percent.
