FIFA President Gianni Infantino announced that there may be changes to the offside rule before the 2026 World Cup. According to the new change, known as the proposal by Arsene Wenger, an attacking player will only be considered offside if they are completely ahead of the defending player.
FIFA is preparing to implement a highly discussed new rule change in football ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
OFFSIDE RULE IS CHANGING
Speaking at the World Sports Summit held in Dubai, FIFA President Gianni Infantino announced that the offside rule change long advocated by Arsenal's legendary manager Arsene Wenger is being seriously considered. According to the proposed change, an attacking player will only be considered offside if they are completely ahead of the defending player. In the current application, any part of the attacking player's body crossing the defensive line is sufficient for an offside decision. It is stated that this regulation aims to speed up the flow of the game in football and encourage attacking play.
TO BE OFFSIDE, MUST BE COMPLETELY AHEAD
In his assessment on the matter, Infantino stated, "This rule, which has evolved over the years, requires the attacking player to be positioned behind or level with the defending player; however, to be offside in the future, they may need to be completely ahead."
