THE IMPORTANCE OF FORDO

The Fordo Nuclear Facility is a site that is closely monitored internationally due to its critical role in Iran's nuclear program, both in terms of technical capacity and location.

The Fordo Nuclear Facility is built about 80-90 meters underground, near Qom, one of Iran's holy cities. With its deep and robust structure, it is highly protected against airstrikes, which is one of the key features that distinguishes it from other nuclear facilities.

The main purpose of the facility is uranium enrichment activities. Particularly with the production of uranium enriched to 20%, it has played a role in the high-level uranium production, which is a sensitive threshold in Iran's nuclear program. This level is a source of international concern as it is closer to the enrichment level needed for nuclear weapon production.

The Fordo Facility was included in the 2015 Nuclear Agreement (JCPOA) signed between Iran and Western countries. Under the agreement, enrichment activities at Fordo were limited, and at one point, even halted. However, after the U.S. withdrew from the agreement in 2018, Iran resumed enrichment activities at this facility.

Due to its underground construction, the late notification to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), and its enrichment capacity suitable for weapons, it has been criticized by some Western countries as being potentially related to military purposes.

Fordo continues to be one of the key topics in nuclear negotiations. The international community demands that Iran transparently open its activities at this facility to inspection and limit them. Iran, on the other hand, is trying to protect its rights at Fordo, arguing that its nuclear program is peaceful.

The Fordo Nuclear Facility is one of the symbols of the conflict between Iran's desire to maintain its nuclear capacity and the concerns of the international community. It is considered one of the most critical parts of the Iranian nuclear dossier from both geopolitical and technical perspectives.

WHAT HAPPENED?

On June 13, Israel launched extensive attacks targeting not only nuclear facilities in various Iranian cities but also the upper command echelon of the army.

The Chief of General Staff of Iran, the Commander of the Revolutionary Guards, and several senior commanders, along with 9 nuclear scientists, were killed in the attacks.

The Iranian Ministry of Health announced on June 21 that the total civilian death toll from Israeli attacks was 430, and the number of injured exceeded 3,500. The Israeli Prime Minister's Office reported that 24 people were killed and 1,272 were injured in the retaliatory actions taken by the Iranian army. Many countries, especially Turkey, condemned Israel.
