DRONE ATTACK ON US BASE BY MILITIAS
According to reports in the Iraqi press, two drones attacked the US Victoria Base near Baghdad International Airport on Monday. News from Iraq's private satellite television channels Al-Sumaria and Al-Rasheed, citing security sources, indicated that one of the drones fell into the operational area, while the other was intercepted by air defense systems. A security source reported that the logistics support center within the base was also among the targets of the attack. No official statement has been made regarding casualties or injuries from the attack.
IRAN-BACKED GROUP CLAIMS RESPONSIBILITY
The Shiite militia group Saraya Awliya al-Dem (Guardians of the Martyrs), active in Iraq, claimed responsibility for the attack. In a statement, the group announced that the attack was a retaliation for the killing of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. This action by Saraya Awliya al-Dem, one of the Shiite militia groups operating in Iraq since the US-led invasion that overthrew Saddam Hussein in 2003, is seen as a new link in the chain of retaliations by Iran-backed armed groups against US and Israeli attacks on targets in Iran. Lebanese Hezbollah had also previously carried out similar attacks and reacted to the killing of the Iranian leader.
AIR STRIKE BY US AND ISRAEL
Following the militia's attack, the Sabreen News Agency, linked to Iran-aligned militias, reported that Israel and the US conducted an airstrike on the town of Jurf al-Nasr in Iraq's Babil province. The strike was said to be in response to the militia's actions against the base. Security sources in the region stated that positions belonging to Iran-backed militia groups were targeted in the airstrike, and there is still no clear information regarding casualties.
